As the annual migration of monarch butterflies draws a blur of tourists along coastal California monarch overwintering sites, I am intrigued by the pilgrimages people make to appreciate in person the qualities these butterflies—and their life cycles—symbolize on natural as well as existential levels.
With this work-in-progress documentary project I am focusing on the particular Monarch Sanctuary located in Pacific Grove, California between October 2015 (the beginning of the overwintering season) and late winter (once the monarchs have mated and depart inland in search of the egg-laying plant, milkweed.)
